Peter Jackson today voiced his desire to bring League Two’s top scorer Clayton Donaldson to City.

The newly-confirmed boss wants to make local lad Donaldson his star capture of what promises to be a hectic summer.

City face stiff competition for the 27-year-old with the likes of Chesterfield, Oxford and Crawley publicly declaring their interest. Crewe have also tabled a new offer to keep him but are not confident.

The Bantams could not compete financially with others – particularly league new boys Crawley who have promised to make Donaldson the best-paid player in the division.

But they are pushing the opportunity for the Manningham-born striker to finally play for his hometown club.

Donaldson started as a trainee on City’s books when they were in the Premier League but was not taken on. After smashing 29 goals last term, Jackson believes he could have a huge impact.

Speaking for the first time about his top target, the City chief said: “I’ve spoken to Clayton and met him and hopefully I’ll be talking to him again.

“Obviously he is expecting interest coming in but we’ve put our marker down with Clayton Donaldson. We have to invest in strikers.

“Strikers that can score you 20 to 25 goals a season can push you into the play-offs. Strikers who get 30 to 35 goals, which Clayton is well capable of doing, can get you to promotion.”
