David Syers has won the Telegraph & Argus award for the most consistent player of the season.

The all-action midfielder has been the stand-out performer of City’s forgettable campaign.

Having been voted the players’ player of the year, Syers also picked up the T&A trophy based on the individual ratings which accompany every match report.

Syers said: “Standing here with the awards is a great feeling. Unfortunately it’s tempered by the fact that this season has been disappointing for the team overall.

“Hopefully I can be here next year in the same situation but with the team going into the last game of the season still looking to be promoted.”

Syers, who joined City from Guiseley last summer after a successful trial, has played 38 games in his first season in pro football. He is also the club’s top scorer with ten goals.

He added: “The football-side of my game has definitely improved over the season. It changed after five or six games and I’d got a couple of goals.

“Up until then I was running around as much as I could but it was a case of wondering ‘do I deserve to be here and am I good enough?’

“But after a while I knew that I could do this and now I want to do even better. I’ve had over 30 starts and I’d probably say I’ve played quite well in most of those games.

“Consistency is something that gets you promoted in this league. Look at Chesterfield – you don’t see them not playing well very often. They grind out results and do what’s necessary.

“We’ve shown now and again what we can do as a team but there have been far too few of those games and confidence has been massively lacking.”

Two players currently not in the side were his closest challengers. Jon McLaughlin had the second best average while Luke O’Brien was third.
