Tom Olbison has celebrated a breakthrough season in Super League by signing a new three-year deal with the Bulls.

The 20-year-old back-rower put pen to paper immediately after Friday’s defeat at Hull FC, agreeing to stay at Odsal until the end of 2014.

Despite making just eight appearances in two years prior to the current campaign, Olbison has quickly become a regular name on the teamsheet under new boss Mick Potter.

And there were never any reservations about committing his future to the club he joined as a 16-year-old.

Olbison said: “It’s a big weight off my shoulders so I can just settle down and concentrate on my rugby now. I’m here for the next few years and I can’t wait.

“I’ve been here a good few years now. I’m loving it so had no reason to think about going anywhere else.

“I’ve been really happy to get my chance in the team because that’s what you train for. To be out there playing with those boys you train with day in, day out is great.”

Since missing out on selection for the season’s opener against Leeds, the former England Academy international has featured in each of the Bulls’ eight games.

Olbison’s performance was one of the few positives in a disappointing 34-24 defeat at Hull but he admits there is still a long way to go.

“I’m pretty pleased with how I’ve been going and if we keep getting the results then everyone will be happy,” he said.

“We didn’t get the result at Hull but it was a tough game and we know we can get better.

“All the players can feel we’re improving week by week and there’s a good buzz about what we can do.

“At the moment I’m just enjoying playing in the first team and if I keep improving every week and keep kicking on, then I’ll be happy.

“But I know if I don’t perform I won’t be in the team. I still have a lot to improve.”

Having started the season on the fringes of the first team, Olbison has forced his way into Potter’s plans and the Bulls boss hailed the youngster’s maturity.

Potter said: “Tom’s stepped up and filled a potential void. He’s stepped up and is starting to make a back-row spot his own and is making himself indispensable. That’s what all players should try and do.

“I’m very happy for Tom and happy he’s going to be here longer term. He’s very tough in defence, runs the ball very hard and is a very likeable young man. He’s modest and his attitude is good.”
