Guiseley 2, Eastbourne Borough 1

Guiseley reached the last eight of the FA Trophy and booked themselves a home quarter-final against Luton Town with a determined display in last night’s third-round replay.

Having put out holders Barrow in the first round, the Lions dispatched another club from the Blue Square Premier in Eastbourne Borough.

The sides had played out a 1-1 draw in nightmare conditions on the south coast at the weekend but Guiseley earned their passage at the second attempt.

The home side created virtually all of the modest amount of chances in the goalless first half.

The nearest they came to opening the scoring was in the 34th minute when a Danny Boshell shot was parried and the Boro keeper gathered Liam Needham’s effort from the rebound.

The stalemate did not last long after the interval as James Walshaw broke the deadlock in style two minutes in.

He was wide on the flank but he curled a left-foot shot in over the visitors’ keeper.

Guiseley were in front for less than six minutes before Boro lifted themselves. They had forced a set- piece and, when the ball was whipped in, Gary Elphick netted a header past Lions keeper Steven Drench.

With home advantage and the passionate local support cheering them on, the Lions went on the hunt for a second goal and the chances created were coming at increasingly regular intervals as the pressure mounted.

The winner was finally fashioned four minutes from time, and it was scored by Joe O‘Neill, who had grabbed the equaliser at Eastbourne to take the tie to a replay.

It stemmed from a crossfield pass from Warren Payton. Walshaw climbed to head it back into the middle and O’Neill’s forehead applied the finishing touch.

Guiseley will be just two games away from an appearance at Wembley when they host The Hatters on February 26 in the quarter-finals.
