Bradford Park Avenue pulled off a double swoop last week when they agreed deals to keep Steve Burton at the club and bring Aiden Savory back to Horsfall Stadium.

Burton is one of the new faces at Horsfall this season but that did not stop the rumour mill working overtime on his future.

Boss Simon Collins captured him from Guiseley and his performances soon led to interest from other clubs.

Worksop Town made an approach and Collins asked his board to put a package together that would be attractive enough to convince Burton to stick around.

Chairman John Dean said: “We worked together, the board and the manager, to get something sorted out because Simon said he didn’t want to lose the player. We put a deal to Steve and, in the week leading up to last Saturday’s FA Trophy tie at Colwyn Bay, he signed the contract.

“The manager and his coaches are building a side for the future so we are happy to do what we can to provide him with what he needs.

“All of the signings Simon has made have been very good, especially Aiden, Steve and, of course, Liam Chapman and keeper Michael Hale.”

Savory’s return follows rumblings of discontent in the close season when last term’s leading scorer was allowed to leave.

Park Avenue had missed out on promotion to the Blue Square Bet North via the play-offs after finishing as runners-up in the Northern Premier League.

Budget cuts were on the cards and players were offered reduced terms. Harrogate Town had expected to be relegated from the Blue Square North but were saved due to Farsley Celtic’s demise and Northwich Victoria’s demotion for financial reasons.

Harrogate came in with an offer for the striker and he was tempted by the desire to play his football a division higher. Since then, his move has turned sour and the speculation that he would return to Avenue mounted.

Dean explained: “We signed him last week in time for him to be involved in the game at Colwyn. He was released by Harrogate Town from his contract which allowed us to re-sign him.”
