Bradford Park Avenue 1, Leeds United 3

Avenue enjoyed their penultimate pre-season friendly against Leeds United tonight but they could not fashion themselves a victory as their neighbours sent a very strong squad.

Many of the players on show will feature for Leeds in the Championship this season, and some were on the bench or recovering from injury as the promoted club started their season with a narrow league defeat and a cup win.

Ramon Nunez netted the only goal of the first half and the contest was ended by two goals in as many minutes just before the hour.

Davide Somma made it 2-0 for the visitors before Adam White made the result safe.

Avenue deservedly denied their visitors a clean sheet but needed a last-minute penalty to claim their goal. Following a foul in the area, Avenue’s former Bradford City striker David Brown placed the ball on the spot but there was some gamesmanship from the Leeds players before he tucked it away.

Avenue director Kevin Hainsworth said: "It was a very good performance from our lads against a very strong side of professionals.

"Nunez was the foreign player on trial for them and the reason we couldn’t charge entry.

"I was told by our vice-president John Helm that Nunez was in the Honduran squad at the World Cup, so that shows the quality we were up against.

"Taking everything into account it was a very good night for our players and we certainly gave them a game.

"It was obvious how seriously the Leeds players were taking it by their reaction at the penalty. The keeper moved the ball off the spot, then one of their defenders did the same.

"It took three minutes from the foul to David striking the ball but, credit to him, he held his nerve."
