Leeds United 4, Lincoln City 0

Leeds eased their way through to the second round of the Carling Cup after overwhelming Lincoln City by four goals.

It was a score that would have been much higher if Simon Grayson’s men had taken all their chances and not taken their foot off the gas in the second half.

It was more like a pre-season match than a cup tie but it provided a useful work-out and Lloyd Sam and Sanchez Watt showed they can be a real threat with their skill and pace.

Grayson only made one change from the side that lost to Derby on Saturday, former Ipswich defender Alex Bruce making his debut at centre-back in place of Richard Naylor.

But there was little chance to see what he could do because Leeds were so dominant.

They were 2-0 up within seven minutes, Jonny Howson netting from a Sam cross and Luciano Becchio turning in a Watt centre from close range.

After several more chances, Sam increased the advantage after half an hour when heading in a perfect Paul Connolly cross.

Grayson gradually introduced some substitutes to try and liven up a second half that was rather downbeat, with Mike Grella, Aidan White and Andrew Hughes getting some game time.

Leeds finally went further ahead when Sam forged into the penalty area and was pulled down, with Neil Kilkenny coolly slotting home the spot-kick.
