Michael Flynn believes pass master Tommy Doherty will bring a clear head to City’s play next season.

The Welshman is excited by the prospect of linking up with new signing Doherty in midfield.

Doherty, who has twice been named in the League Two team of the season, steered Peter Taylor’s Wycombe to promotion two years ago.

And Flynn is looking forward to seeing the former Northern Ireland international dictating matters at Valley Parade with his know-how.

He said: “I’ve played against Tommy a few times at Bristol City and QPR and he’s always been very good with the ball.

“He brings experience and has the ability to slow the game down. You do need that composure, especially when things aren’t going right.

“Sometimes you just clear the ball away and hope and then basically end up having to defend it twice. But instead, if you can keep the ball and make three, four or five little passes, everybody feels that little bit more confident.

“Having Tommy in there with me and Bully (Lee Bullock) will give us a good balance.”

Taylor aims to bag another striker and attacking midfielder in time for the pre-season kick-off a week today.

But co-chairman Mark Lawn reckons City’s engine-room triumvirate can be the envy of League Two.

He thinks Doherty’s arrival will also take the heat off Flynn to always look to deliver the killer pass going forward.

Lawn said: “I think that Tommy will improve Flynn. It won’t be all down to him to make that pass as it has been.

“In my view, there won’t be a much better midfield than the one we’ve got. With Lee Bullock as the defensive midfielder and Flynn and Doherty in front of him, we look very strong there.”
