Former Leeds and England goalkeeper Nigel Martyn believes Robert Green should be given another chance after his World Cup blunder against the United States.

Martyn sympathises with Green for allowing Clint Dempsey’s tame shot to slip through his fingers for the equaliser at the weekend.

“I hope Robert is given a chance to put things right,” said Martyn, who works as a part-time goalkeeping coach with Bradford City.

“Every keeper in the country will make that kind of error at some stage of his career. Unfortunately for Robert he made his in the World Cup.

“He pulled off a great save later in the game, which was good to see, and he will want to play again as quickly as possible to put his mistake behind him, so I hope he gets another chance.

“The truth is that the England team didn’t play as well as they can, so it wasn’t all down to Robert. The other players could have softened the blow for him but chances were missed and we ended up drawing the match.

“Goalkeepers have an attitude that they want to help the guys in front of them but their mistakes are usually costly.”

Green’s biggest rival for a place in England’s next game against Algeria on Friday is David James, who has previously been dubbed ‘Calamity James’ after a series of blunders.

Joe Hart, who shone while on loan to Birmingham last season, is the third keeper in the squad but at 23 the Manchester City stopper lacks experience and is unlikely to be risked.
