Damien Melvin added another two goals to his hefty collection as West Bowling clinched the Bradford Sunday Alliance League championship with a 4-1 win in their Premier Division title decider against Buttershaw White Star.

Melvin had scored 38 times in all competitions before this match but his double against defending champions White Star must rate as two of the most important strikes of any season for him.

Bowling made a dream start when they were awarded a free-kick just outside the opposing penalty area inside the opening five minutes and Patsy Hollinger fired the ball round the defensive wall to put the hosts ahead.

The play then moved from end to end with neither side threatening to score until a defensive error in the 16th minute allowed the home side to double their lead.

Bowling goalkeeper Ash Onitiri cleared the ball, his opposite number allowed it to bounce over his head and, despite frantic efforts to clear, he could only help it into the net.

Buttershaw were not ready to give up their crown without a fight and struck back on 25 minutes when John Selby headed home a near-post header to make it 2-1.

But Melvin responded with a good finish within five minutes for the first of his brace as the visitors were caught on the counter-attack.

The tempo of the game rose in the second half, with both teams threatening and the two goalkeepers kept busy.

But Bowling killed off the game with a fourth goal two minutes from the end as White Star were again caught on the counter-attack, with Melvin making no mistake to notch his 40th goal of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Dudley Hill Rangers will be playing Premier Division football next season as they secured promotion by overpowering Oakworth Juniors 6-2.

A Paul Licence hat-trick for Rangers was backed up by Andrew Bailey, Chris Gibbons and Wayne Roberts.
