James Hanson has capped a memorable first season in the professional game by being named City’s top man by the fans.

Hanson was crowned the Telegraph & Argus/Map Group UK player of the year, beating off Simon Ramsden and Michael Flynn in the vote from supporters.

And he made it a double by scooping the T&A most consistent performer award – the first player to land both trophies since David Wetherall in 2006.

Hanson has taken the leap from playing non-league football in his giant stride with 13 goals – and it would probably be more if he was not out with a hamstring injury.

A year ago, he was juggling UniBond League matches for Guiseley with a full-time job stacking shelves in the Co-op.

The big striker has been gobsmacked by how well his debut campaign has gone. He said: “It’s been unbelievable. I couldn’t have dreamt it would go any better.

“I’ve just got to keep my feet on the ground, work hard in the summer and come back stronger next year. Hopefully then I can score more goals.”

Rival defenders and managers may have cottoned on to his threat but Hanson is confident he will be no one-hit wonder.

He said: “When I was at Guiseley, I scored 25 in my first season and the manager there warned me the second year would be the hardest.

“All the opposition knew about me but I still managed to get 21 goals. As long as the chances keep coming, and I’m sure they will, then hopefully I’ll be putting them away.”

The consistency award is based on the individual marks out of ten given by the T&A with each match report.

Hanson’s average of 6.64 narrowly saw off Ramsden (6.58), with Lee Bullock third (6.48).

But Bullock’s unheralded work in City’s midfield was acknowledged by his team-mates last night, who honoured him with the players’ player of the year title.

Hanson also won the Michael Stainthorpe Memorial Shield and the City supporters’ club under-25s player of the year. Ramsden was the IDL Supporters Club choice.

Tom Marshall was named the youth team player of the year. The David Bairstow Trophy for the most promising junior from the centre of excellence went to Chris Elliott.
