Here’s a bit of trivia: Who scored City’s last penalty? A bit of a clue – it wasn’t this season.

You have to go back to January last year to find the answer is Barry Conlon. The Irishman kept his nerve to earn City a 3-3 draw at Luton with a spot-kick in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

Amazingly, the Bantams have not notched a penalty since. Excluding Johnstone’s Paint Trophy shoot-outs, they have only had two this season and both were missed.

Michael Flynn was denied by Lincoln goalkeeper Rob Burch in the opening home game and Gareth Evans blasted wide in the last minute against Accrington.

City have given away six penalties at the other end, with Jon McLaughlin pulling off the only save at Burton a fortnight ago.

Don’t bank against seeing another spot-kick on Saturday in City’s final trip to Saltergate; because Chesterfield have had plenty of them.

Conlon has netted seven times since swapping Grimsby for the Spireites but only twice from open play. His last five goals have all come from the spot.

Former team-mate and good pal Matt Clarke admitted: “It’s a prolific record. Even though it’s only 12 yards out, taking penalties is not as easy as it looks, but I can only remember him missing one for us.

“The ones he’s got this season have all been in crucial games as well with them in play-off contention.”

Conlon’s colourful career has taken another upturn, swapping a doomed survival fight with the Mariners for a top-seven push under John Sheridan.

The much-travelled striker’s contract is up in the summer but he will be hoping his goals convince Chesterfield to offer another deal.

Clarke said: “When he left Grimsby, Baz was a bit upset about where he would end up but he’s landed on his feet. One minute he’s looking like going down, the next he’s swapped it for the other end of the table.

“It must be strange but it’s worked out well and now he’s fighting for a place in League One.

“Baz wasn’t involved last week when they got beaten (at Macclesfield) but I’m sure he’ll get a chance against us. You know how it often is with strikers playing against their old clubs and scoring.”

That wasn’t the case when Conlon faced City in Grimsby colours at Blundell Park in November. The visitors romped to a 3-0 win, with the targetman getting the bird from away fans after missing several chances. But Clarke warned against writing him off second time around.

He said: “He was very disappointed with that night and it was a big let-down for him. Now Baz has got another bite at the cherry and we’ll have to make sure he doesn’t get his own back.”

Clarke has been out of action for five weeks with a calf injury but made his comeback with a goal in the reserves on Monday night.

He said: “You want to keep yourself in the shop window at the business end of the season, especially with a new manager not seeing a lot of you. It’s not ideal but hopefully I’ll get my chance again.

“We can still finish in the top half of the table, which would be an improvement. It’s all about pride now and trying to do well for the fans.”
