Come on you Reds, but not at Dennyfield, as Thackley look to replace the tag.

Club president Richard Paley is looking to swap the moniker with something carrying a bit more gravitas. He has arranged a poll-type vote for the supporters and locals to select a nickname more befitting the club.

Paley said: "Our committee have discussed the nickname that we seem to have acquired, namely 'The Reds'.

"To be frank we don't like it. We feel that it lacks character and is too closely associated with both Liverpool and Manchester United. Consequently we have decided to hold a competition to decide on a new nickname for our club.

"I would welcome entrants from the readers of the Telegraph & Argus in general, as well as our own fans.

"Who knows? Someone may contribute by providing us with a new and, hopefully, original nickname."

The club are also hoping to raise funds for the club from the competition by distributing entry forms through the community, asking for donations of £1 per entry. Forms are also available from the clubhouse.

Paley has suggested a list of 14 names and outlined why those have been suggested.

One of the ones listed on the form is ‘The Reds’ because, although the committee do not like it, they realise it may be popular.

The preferred list ranges from The Buccaneers, because the ground is alongside Buck Wood, to The Bees, as the club’s badge features a beehive, to The Thick’eads, due to that being the colloquial term for inhabitants of Thackley.
