Close season signing Aiden Savory notched his 15th goal of the season in last Saturday’s 3-2 win over Nant-wich Town and is slowly winning over the fans.

The 21-year-old striker is the club’s leading marksman in a youthful strikeforce, which also includes Matty James (21), winger Luke Gibson (19) and Chris Hall (22).

Former Premier League striker Andy Campbell is back at Horsfall Stadium following his loan spell at rivals Whitby Town – but he could find it tough breaking back into the side.

Avenue have won seven out of eight league games since boss John Deacey took charge and Savory has been finding the net regularly during that time.

He was level-pegging with Hall back in October but has since stolen a march on his strike partner.

Hall, the subject of an offer from Coca Cola League One outfit Stockport County last season, was expected to head the goalscorers’ list this season but he has missed several games over the last two months due to an ankle injury and has largely been restricted to cameo appearances from the bench.

That has allowed Savory to race ahead in the scoring chart.

A brace against Durham City saw him the first to reach double figures and two goals in the 6-5 County Cup win against Silsden, plus his strike against Nantwich, means he is well on the way to the magical 20-goal mark that all strikers crave.

Hall has 11, while the best of the rest is Gibson with seven.
