Stuart McCall is convinced Nicky Law will make the grade as a Championship player again.

McCall comes face-to-face with his former prodigy on Saturday when Law returns to Valley Parade with Rotherham.

The midfielder played 35 games on loan with City last season and credited the Bantams boss with rescuing his career, which had gone stale at Sheffield United.

City wanted to make the deal permanent in the summer but Law opted to join the Millers.

But McCall can understand his reasons – and is tipping Law to work his way back up and establish himself as a higher-division player.

There has already been Championship interest in the 21-year-old, and the Bantams boss is not surprised.

He said: “I’m sure he will play at a higher level again. Nicky is an excellent footballer, technically he’s very good and he works hard.

“He’s dropped down from Sheffield United and done really well. He’s a good kid with the right attitude and can play a variety of positions.

“We’ve seen him play left and right as well as in a midfield three. He also worked on his strength and defensive responsibilities when he was here to play in a central two, which is where Rotherham are using him now.”

Law scored three goals for City last term – including one against Rotherham at the Don Valley Stadium.

McCall added: “It was a blow when we couldn’t keep him. Nicky did well for us and I think we did well for him.

“I know he enjoyed his time here. But financially we couldn’t afford him with the cuts we had to make.

“He was also travelling up from Chesterfield every day which was taking an hour and a half or longer. At Rotherham, he joined a team a lot nearer to him who had spent money in the summer and were looking for automatic promotion.

“We did try but a month into it I realised he was probably going to go to Rotherham.

“I think he’s got a good future ahead of him and I’m sure it will be at a higher level.”

Law, who also spent two months with City in 2007, admitted: “I will always be forever grateful to Stuart. Telling him I wasn’t signing for Bradford was one of the toughest calls I’ve ever had to make.”
