Gordon J Brand’s five-under-par 66 was not enough to stop Neil Cheetham from winning the Thompson Davis PGA North Region Championship at Marriott Hollins Hall in Baildon.

The former Ryder Cup player from Menston fired the round of the second day but finished six behind Cheetham after only just making the cut following an opening 77.

The 42-year-old Cheetham, who has just completed his summer coaching stint at Dore and Totley, signed off with a 67 for a five-under-par total to win by four shots from Woodsome Hall’s David Astin.

Westerhope professional George Cowan, who led by two shots overnight, stayed in the box seat until half-way through the final round but three bogeys in four holes from the 11th cost him.

Shipley’s Nathan Stead and Willow Valley’s Lee Shepherd finished joint 22nd on five over.
