Record-breaking Aussie superstar Steve Menzies today told Bulls fans: “I want to do it all again in Super League.”

The legendary Manly second row is switching to Bradford from the NRL after 14 seasons at the table-topping Sea Eagles.

He joins for the 2009 campaign, drawing a close to his glorious career in Australia where he reached four Grand Finals, played in 15 Tests and represented New South Wales 20 times.

Only one player has scored more than Menzies’ 131 tries in the history of the Australian game but his appetite is hungrier than ever.

Menzies told the T&A he had spoken to Manly team-mates and former St Helens star Jamie Lyon about his imminent move to the English competition.

“I asked Jamie about his experience over there, the crowds and passion for rugby league, and he loved it but deciding which was biggest between the Super League and Challenge Cup finals was a really tough question to answer,” said Menzies.

“He said both had amazing atmospheres and hopefully I can savour them both with Bradford.

“I’ve toured the UK with Australia in ’94 and ’95 but always wanted to play club rugby over there as well.

“When the opportunity came along to do that with the Bulls – one of the strongest clubs – I grabbed it. I want to come over and win trophies with them and Steve McNarama and I can’t wait.”

Menzies, so prolific because of his dazzling footwork, turns 35 in December but remains one of the NRL’s fittest, most consummate professionals.

Many expected the one-club man to retire at the end of the season but he said: “Currently I am feeling the best I’ve felt for the last 18 months.

“The enthusiasm, competitiveness and passion is always there and I’ll bring that to Bradford. Hopefully my experience and knowledge can help them out and we can enjoy some good times together.

“The weirdest thing will be putting on a different jersey and not running out with a bit of maroon and white on me!”

Menzies, who won the World Cup in 1995 – the same year he became the first forward in half a century to top the Aussie try-scoring charts with 22 – has played a phenomenal 338 games for Manly.

His versatility – he can also play centre and stand-off – will be a big plus for Bradford, whose boss McNamara is ecstatic by Menzies’ decision to sign for the Odsal club.

He will be 35 by the time he pulls on a Bulls jersey but McNamara believes that is irrelevant, given the player’s standing.

McNamara said: “Steve is a quality signing and a really exciting capture. He has achieved so much in the game and is a true great who offers so much.

“He’s obviously a legendary try-scorer but also a mean defender, totally dedicated, professional and mentally tough.

“We need those sorts of people at Bradford and I’m thrilled Steve has decided to join us here for next year.”

Meanwhile, Menzies hopes to bow out in Sydney with a second Grand Final winners’ ring.

He said: “We’re going pretty well. We’re coming to the end of the final few chapters and hopefully they will be kind to me.”
