Northcliffe’s Gareth Evans failed to make the cut at a wet and windy British Amateur Championship at Turnberry.

A second-round 82 on the Kintyre course saw Evans card a 156 total, missing out by six shots.

In difficult weather conditions, he shot a 74 on the opening day on Turnberry’s Ailsa course in Ayrshire.

But Evans hit big trouble halfway through his second round. Having reached the turn at level par, he haemorrhaged ten shots over the back nine.

Evans dropped seven shots between ten and 15, including a double bogey at the par-five 14th, and then a further three with a seven on the par-four penultimate hole to limp home on 82.

His eventual total saw him 17 shots adrift of mid-point leader Sam Hutsby from Liphook.

The last 64 qualified for a match-play showdown which will be settled on Friday.
