THE Yorkshire County Cricket Club squad are flying home from Abu Dhabi after a jam-packed week of action against fellow first-class counties.

Their first assignment was last weekend’s Abu Dhabi Counties Super Cup T20 competition, where they finished fourth.

Yorkshire began with a bang, earning a five-wicket victory over Vitality Blast champions Somerset last Friday with 15 balls to spare.

A superb 60 off 39 balls from James Wharton underpinned the White Rose’s successful chase, after Matt Milnes and Dan Moriarty both claimed two wickets apiece to help limit Somerset to 155-5.

The following day, a blistering 96 off 41 balls from Birmingham Bears captain and opener Alex Davies helped consigned Yorkshire to 23-run defeat.

His powerful and inventive innings was the standout in an imposing total of 222-5.

Leg-spinner Jafer Chohan was the pick of a Vikings attack who came under fire, returning an impressive 0-22 from four overs, conceding only one boundary.

Seamer Dom Leech claimed 3-47 from his four overs, but proved expensive and despite Yorkshire’s best efforts, their chase fell short.

Yorkshire opener Will Luxton then starred with a fine 67 off 39 balls, before a buccaneering innings of 49 late on from Dom Bess dragged the White Rose to 199-9 at the end of their 20 overs.

That defeat left Yorkshire playing in the third-place play-off, which they lost to a vengeful Somerset in a thriller.

Half-centuries from Adam Lyth and Wharton were added to by Matthew Fisher’s 3-25, but the efforts of that trio were not enough as Yorkshire lost by three wickets off the final ball of the game.

Yorkshire then stayed on in Abu Dhabi, as they played a two-day friendly in midweek against Warwickshire.

The Birmingham outfit batted on day one, Jordan Thompson and Fisher sharing seven wickets between them as Yorkshire bowled their opponents out for 310.

Yorkshire were at the crease yesterday, with George Hill’s well-paced 81 the feature of his side’s 330-9 on the second and final day of the game.

The squad now return to Headingley, where they will continue preparations for the new season with a three-day home fixture against Leeds/Bradford MCC Universities, starting next Tuesday.
