ONE win, two draws, 11 defeats – and that was in a year when City would win promotion!

Duncan Yellen and his mate Pat felt like a jinx when they went to games in the 1995/1996 season.

But that never put them off and neither did bumping into a group of Stoke fans “here for the bother” in a pub before the decisive final league trip to Hull.

Duncan, whose grandad George saw City win the FA Cup in 1911 as a seven-year-old, has put his football passion to prose with his recollections from a lifetime of visiting clubs up and down the country.

It’s a book that every fan can relate to – the pre-match pints, good or otherwise, the traffic problems, the friend who always seems to attract trouble … and the let-down performances after making all the effort to get there.

Dodgy pies, even dodgier toilets, the Milton Keynes roundabouts – they are all in here.

The Amazon version is bang up to date after he finally got to see City at Wrexham last weekend – quite a result to finish the book!

It is not all about City on tour but going to different grounds generally, such as a trip from university to see Kenny Dalglish in his pomp for Liverpool as they beat Benfica in the European Cup.

Some stories warrant much more than others – a 1994 visit to Burnley’s Turf Moor gets barely a paragraph with Duncan admitting he still vremains none the wiser what happened that day!

There are family connections we can identify with, like taking his twin sons to their first game at Accrington.

“We stood on a forlorn away terrace with no roof and watched forlorn football”. City lost 2-0.

At least they got in. Duncan may have attended England’s Euros final, two FA Cup finals and two League Cup finals – but he couldn’t get a ticket for Harrogate away.

This is following football as it should be; a million miles away from the plastic glitz of the Premier League.

There are no airs and graces about “92” and that’s what makes it an enjoyable read.

For the record, he has watched games at well over 100 grounds but four clubs are still to be ticked off the list: Sunderland, Southampton, Luton and Bolton. There is always a cup draw.
