CLARKE Oduor is ready to go on the attack with City next season.

Valley Parade’s first summer recruit has made it clear where he expects to operate in Mark Hughes’ plans.

The versatile Kenya international played at left wing-back for most of his time at Barnsley. But he has not been pencilled in for defensive duties with the Bantams.

“I’m a midfielder, an attacking midfielder,” Oduor told the T&A.

“That’s where I played when I was growing up and that’s where I feel I can give my best and create the most chances.

“Bradford see me as an attacking option, whether it’s off the left, the right or in the middle. That all sounds good to me because I want to make things happen.

“It’s all about stamping down a position. It’s good to be versatile but sometimes you need to find your position and make that work.”

The 23-year-old is keen to get his career going again after a frustrating finish to his time at Oakwell.

He made 14 appearances on loan at Hartlepool but went back halfway through and did not feature at all in Barnsley’s charge to the League One play-off final.

“When I came back, I knew I wouldn’t get much game time," he admitted. "But anything can happen with injuries and that, so I had to keep my fitness.

“It was about supporting the boys and keeping my mind right.

“It’s definitely difficult because you’re involved without really being involved, if you know what I mean.

“I’ve not played as much as I wanted the last couple of years.

“It’s hard when you’re playing and doing well and then things change around the club with different staff and managers.

“You’d have a manager who likes you and then something changes and you may not fit in their plan or how they want to play.

“It breaks the momentum and it is hard to get going again. But that happens in football and hopefully this can be the fresh start I need.

“The next move was definitely the big one, where I could just go and show everyone again how good I am and what I have to offer.

“There’s been a lot of talk and Bradford showed the most interest. It’s just nice to be going somewhere where you feel valued and they want the best for you.”

Oduor had a mixed time with Hartlepool, who would eventually be relegated, but it gave him a first taste of what to expect in League Two.

“It was good to play a few games and see what the league’s about,” he added. “There’s a stereotype that it’s not the best league but there are good players in there and good teams.

“It will be difficult but I think I’m going to enjoy it.

“You’re always going to have expectation with Bradford because it’s a massive club. Averaging 18,000 crowds is crazy - that would be some number for the Championship.

“Last year was a good season, although it was obviously very disappointing to lose in the semi-finals and not to go up.

“But it’s good to have that to build on for next year and take that extra step. I want to enjoy it and bring something a bit different to the team.”

Oduor is excited to be linking up with Andy Cook after his prolific campaign - and happy to accept the pressure of providing the supply for the top scorer in the division.

“If it’s not good he’ll let me know and if he doesn’t put it in, I’ll let him know. That’s fine with me.

“That brings up everybody’s standards and that’s how it should be. It will benefit everyone.

“Scoring 31 goals in any league, anywhere is just crazy.

“Credit to him for a fantastic season and hopefully he can carry on. It seems like he’s got that mentality about him and he doesn’t want to stop there.”

City had teed up another potential player announcement for fans. That is now likely to happen later this week.
