BRADFORD darts ace Joe Cullen made two quarter-finals over the weekend.

He has largely been in European Tour action over the last couple of months, but was back on home soil last Sunday, taking part in Players Championship 11 and 12 at the Morningside Arena in Leicester.

In the former, he started out in the last-128 with a comfortable 6-2 win over Jose Justicia, before defeating Cameron Menzies 6-4.

He squeezed past Mario Vandenbogaerde 6-5 to reach the last-16, where he edged another 11-set thriller against Ryan Joyce.

The Wyke native was unlucky to run into an inspired Radek Szaganski in the quarter-finals though.

The unfancied Pole had already knocked out reigning Masters champion Chris Dobey and World Cup winner Simon Whitlock, with Cullen his next big scalp.

The Bradfordian was thumped 6-1, before Szaganski’s remarkable run came to an end with a gripping 7-6 defeat to Rob Cross in the semis.

World number five Cross went on to win the tournament, and his first PDC title of 2023 in the process, by beating Mike De Decker 8-3 in the final.

Cullen was back again the following day for Players Championship 12, opening up with a 6-2 victory against Matthew Dennant.

Martijn Kleermaker was next to fall to the Wyke man, losing to him 6-3.

Cullen then crushed Brendan Dolan 6-1 in the last-32, before his best win of the weekend, a 6-3 success against Gerwyn Price.

But he was knocked out at the quarter-final stage for the second day in a row, when Andrew Gilding beat him 6-3.

Gilding went to lose 7-5 to Josh Rock in the last-four, but the young Northern Irishman then lost the final 8-5 against Jonny Clayton.
