GEORGE Flanagan has become Keven Appo’s unofficial tour guide to help the Bulls overseas star feel at home.

The Papua New Guinea international announced his arrival at Odsal with an eye-catching effort from the bench in the win over Widnes.

And Flanagan revealed how he has been showing Appo the local sights to ensure he settles into his new surroundings as quickly as possible.

“When he’s come halfway across the world, he just wants someone there with him to have a chat,” said Flanagan.

“He’s come from a totally different culture back home. Every one of the lads have welcomed him with open arms.

“He’s going around the gym in Tong and he’s got this beaming smile on his face. You can’t help but not love the guy.

“When I’m off and not working I go and pick him up. I took him to Dudley Hill on the first Saturday after he arrived and then we went to Birkenshaw.

“I wanted him to get used to the environment. He can never understand what I’m saying but I’m sure he’ll get used to me.

“He’s got a girlfriend and a kid back home waiting to come over and me and young George (Flanagan junior) said we’d take Kev out for the day.

“When Kev came here with nobody with him, I’m sure he’d want some people there supporting him.

“That’s something I thrive on. I want the best for my team-mates and the club because it means so much.

“I even took him to Marstons Chicken Shop and he absolutely loved that. I was telling him it was the best in Europe and he took his three breast and chips home with him!”

Appo made an instant impact on his Bulls debut in their last-gasp victory, both with the ball as well as forcing several Widnes handling errors with strong hits.

Flanagan added: “I thought he was superb when he came on and that’s just a start.

“You’ll see the best of him in the coming weeks. He still getting used to the place and the calls and people tipping him what to do.

“I was proud as punch of the team because we did not crumble. Widnes are a quality team and it was an arm wrestle at times but we stuck in there and the mentality was superb.

“You know if you make a mistake that somebody has got your back. That’s the culture and environment we’re working in this year.

“We spoke about our home form being one of our main points this year. Last season it wasn’t the best, we all know that, and we probably lost a lot of people because of that.

“But we’re not getting carried away because we’ve got two tough assignments coming up.”

Flanagan has discussed with coach Mark Dunning about having more of a starting role this season. Instead, it was George Roby coming on in his place to give the team a lift in the latter stages of the first half.

“The roles have reversed. Robes has come in and his attitude, enthusiasm and zip out of dummy half is electric. He’s really fast and dynamic - I was like that many moons ago.

“I speak to Robes daily and you just have to let him play. He might go three times in one set at the line but that one time he might get the four points we need.

“He’s a good little player and I’m sure he’s only going to get better.”
