SIR - Despite what is written in the article on the Bradford's Midland Hotel 'Spirit of Bradford Bar' reopening on a limited basis, (T&A, July 28), Bradford City AFC did not win the FA Challenge Cup in 1912.
In 1912 City only reached the Fourth Round of the competition losing to the eventual winners Barnsley 3-2 after three goalless draws.
Bradford's morning newspaper, The Yorkshire Observer, Thursday, April 27, 1911, reported the previous day's Cup Final Replay - Bradford City 1 Newcastle United 0: "It is achieved. The battle is over and the football field is won. The Bradford City team met and conquered the greatest team of modern football history, and thus realised the crowning distinction of becoming the possessors of the English Cup, the most coveted trophy that is to be fought for in any democratic sport. They beat Newcastle United on the splendid arena of the Manchester United Club at Old Trafford yesterday, in the presence of nearly 70,000 people."
"There may have been some good fortune attached to the scoring of the winning goal, but let no man say that the victory was undeserved. Bradford City did not show the skill of their opponents, but they exhibited qualities which are essential to success, and the good fortune that often attends a good cause watched over them. The victory was gained exactly as it was expected to be gained, and it was nobly won."
