JONNY Bairstow crashed the second-fastest Test fifty in England's history at Headingley earlier today, as the hosts completed a seven-wicket win over New Zealand to wrap up the series 3-0.

Bradford native Bairstow bludgeoned 71 not out off just 44 balls, as England made light work of chasing 296 to win in the fourth innings.

He reached his fifty off only 30 balls, with only Ian Botham's 28-ball effort against India in 1981 coming any faster.

At the other end right throughout Bairstow's innings this afternoon was his Yorkshire team-mate Joe Root, who finished unbeaten on 86.

After rain wiped out the morning session, England took just over an hour to score the 113 runs they required overnight to seal victory.

Fans were given free entry for this fifth and final day, and were treated to an attacking masterclass in the process.

England are next in action this Friday. They host India at Edgbaston in the fifth and final Test of a series that began last year, but was curtailed due to Covid issues within the visiting camp.

India currently lead 2-1, but with England in great form, they will be hoping to end the series level.
