SIR - There is a laissez faire attitude amongst a proportion of football supporters. It is hardly surprising when fans sing “We’ll do what we want! We’ll do what we want", etc.

The football authorities seem incapable of stopping the routine use of flares at games and pitch invasions. Flares give off an acrid smoke and are a danger to anyone with breathing problems.

Heavy fines and banning orders should be imposed on anyone bringing flares to matches and invading the playing area. The ‘official’ pyrotechnics before major finals, each year bigger and more spectacular, are totally unnecessary and serve as encouragement to those who want to put on their own display of loyalty to their chosen team.
