DESPITE the football season coming to a close, Campion manager Lee Ashforth has described this period as the "busiest" for those in charge.

Him and joint manager James Bicknell are working tirelessly to get a number of key transfer incomings over the line, but he will be pleased with the business that has already taken place.

In recent days, defender Karl Fitzgerald arrived from Step Five side Garforth Town, striker Asa Mitchell joined from Thackley and forward Sean Hunter has returned to the club.

Harry Parsons was also set to join up with Campion but the young defender performed a u-turn to remain at Silsden.

Based on their early work in the transfer market, Campion look set to put the struggles of last season in the North West Counties behind them.

Discussing the club's business, manager Ashforth said: "All the players that we have signed so far are from the league above, which is a big thing for us because it's important that we add quality to the squad. It also sends a message out to the rest of the league that we are serious about competing next season.

"We had a terrible campaign last time out, not a season Campion are accustomed to because we are a club that usually compete at the top of the league. Me and James have spoke and we have said that we are not going to let that happen again.

"We did have a lot of things that went against us last season, moving across to the North West Counties being one of them, and we didn't cope with that transition very well.

"We wanted to come back across to the North East Division and we have achieved that for next season, which is great news. It means we can now target players from the area we know.

"We are meeting players regularly, speaking to players regularly and we are confident about getting a very strong squad together for next season."

As well as bringing new players in, Campion have also retained the services of Nicky Boshell for another season- to the delight of Ashforth.

He said: "Nicky has been an important part of our team for a number of years now, so I felt it was key that we kept him on.

"He's at the back end of his career now, so we need to manage him well but his experience and quality is massive for us. We feel that if we can get some good players around him then he'll continue to shine."
