THERE was an exciting three-way battle for the team prize at a district golf competition, with Clayton coming out on top to claim the honours.

Bradford & District Union of Golf Clubs held its annual Nine-Hole Club Teams Championship as some of the area’s most experienced players took to the course.

The event, held this year at Fulneck, involved clubs including Clayton, East Bierley, Sand Moor, Bradford Moor, Bradford South, Ghyll and Rawdon fielding representatives.

The nine-hole team championship at the event produced a close contest.

Clayton Golf Club came out winners, claiming a total score of 228 and a standing of +30. Their team featured Bruce MacDonald, Robert Rowntree, Jimmy Sidney and Andrew Robinson.

They pipped East Bierley and Fulneck to the title, with both teams finishing with a total of 228 and a standing of +31.

The East Bierley team was made up of Allan Cranston, Gerard Grogan, Mark Roper and Russell Simpson. Fulneck was represented in this event by Matthew Atter, Ian Holdsworth and Thomas McHale.

Ghyll Golf Club finished fourth with a score of 231 and a standing of +33. Bradford Moor were fifth with 233 and +35. South Bradford carded a sixth-placed finish with 235 and +37, while Rawdon also recorded 235 and +37.

In eighth place came Headley Golf Club with 273 and +75, while debutants East Morton Golf Club came ninth with 294 and +96.

Meanwhile, in the individual honours at last Sunday’s event, Bruce MacDonald, from Clayton Golf Club, claimed the event’s individual Nett prize with a score of 64.

He beat off competition from Gerard Grogan, of East Bierley Golf Club, and Jimmy Sidney, of Clayton Golf Club, who finished in joint second place, each scoring 67. Mark Roper, of Sand Moor, was next with 69.

In the event’s individual gross prize, Andrew Busfield, of South Bradford, claimed the prize with 71. In second place was Eliot Platt, of Ghyll Golf Club, with 73, while Adam Charles, of Bradford Moor Golf Club, was third with 74.

East Morton Golf Club took part in the event for the first time in the club’s history.

Simon Tabel, Bradford Golf Union president for 2022, says it was an exciting event for the union and is looking forward to a busy summer of action ahead for club representatives in the district.

He was named union president for 2020, but this stint was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now restrictions have been fully lifted, the Keighley member is enjoying the role.

Mr Tabel said: “The trophy has been played for since 1948.

“The course at Fulneck was in a great condition.

It was very competitive this year, with there being just a point between Clayton, East Bierley and Fulneck. It was very close

“The Clayton team had a very experienced line-up. Some of them have been playing for the past 40 years.

“It is certainly an event that we look forward to. It is a very busy season for us in the union.

“It will be a busy summer ahead for us.”

The Bradford Golf Union lost their inter-district match against the East Riding Union at Skipton Golf Club, which was held on May 15.

Bradford’s seniors hope to get back to winning ways when they face Leeds Union on June 12.
