THE League Two story has one final chapter to be written at Wembley.

Mansfield and Port Vale will battle it out in Saturday’s play-off final – with the remaining promotion place alongside Forest Green, Exeter and Bristol Rovers up for grabs.

City fans slammed the door shut on the 2021-2022 campaign a fortnight ago as all thoughts quickly turned towards, hopefully, a much better outcome next time around.

But as the Mark Hughes overhaul continues at a pace, here is one last look-back at the previous nine months – and the opposing players who caught the eye against the Bantams.

Forget the official team of the year, here is this reporter’s line-up of the best of the rest judged purely on how they performed facing City.

TOM KING (Salford)

The Wales international defied the Bantams to set up former boss Gary Bowyer for a last-minute win over his old club at the Peninsula Stadium.

Keeper King pulled off a blinding point-blank save from Andy Cook when City’s top scorer was sure that he had headed the visitors in front.

He threatened to frustrate City again when Salford were down to 10 men at Valley Parade – before a deflected own goal broke his resistance.

JOSH KEY (Exeter)

I was tempted to name him among the six substitutes for extra-time purposes.

The Exeter right back came to prominence in City’s season as the “illegal” sixth replacement during the never-ending FA Cup saga in November.

But Key gets the nod here for taking the tie back to Exeter in the first place. He transformed the initial first-round tie at Valley Parade after coming off the bench and set up his side’s late equaliser.

OLI HAWKINS (Mansfield)

The beanpole Stags man has been used at both ends of the pitch, slotting in as a centre half just as effectively as when he plays up front.

The comeback win at Field Mill was one of the high points of Derek Adams’ reign but Hawkins had looked like spoiling the party when he struck twice – one with a trademark header and then a well-taken volley.

ROLLIN MENAYESE (Walsall)

There were far too many frustrating afternoons at Valley Parade as City chipped away without success against stubborn opposition.

One of the worst was when Walsall played for over half the game down to 10 but continued to hold their hosts at bay for a draw.

Centre half Menayese was a cornerstone of that resistance as the “seven or eight” that Adams claimed City should have scored remained at one.

NICK TSAROULLA (Crawley)

City always have their hands full with Crawley and last season was no exception as the Sussex side clinched a home-and-away double.

Left back Tsaroulla won a penalty when they triumphed at Valley Parade behind closed doors in April 2021 – and he made another crucial impact in front of fans with the Broadfield winner in September as he drove home from just inside the box.

ELLIOT ANDERSON (Bristol Rovers)

The on-loan Newcastle midfielder was a driving force as Rovers stepped on the Gas in their late promotion charge.

City certainly found him too hot to handle at the Memorial Stadium in April with Anderson a key factor in the rising home shot count.

Anderson did not get on the scoresheet but was instrumental in the second-half fightback that saw off Mark Hughes’ men.

DAVIS KEILLOR-DUNN (Oldham)

They might have been relegated but you could not have a list of opposition bogeymen without someone from Oldham.

Keillor-Dunn had scored twice against City in 2020-2021 and he notched another with a header in the Latics’ customary 2-0 win at Boundary Park when Mark Trueman was back in temporary charge.

TIMOTHEE DIENG (Exeter)

The Ex factor weighed heavily on the Bantams in a campaign when eight former City players either scored or set up goals against their old club.

The Frenchman was one of those with a smartly-taken equaliser as Exeter came from behind to win the replayed FA Cup replay.

Dieng also impressed in midfield when the Grecians won comfortably at Valley Parade in City’s final game under Adams.

JACK DIAMOND (Harrogate)

Harrogate love playing against City – the on-loan Sunderland left winger certainly does.

Diamond scored three times as the Sulphurites toppled their Yorkshire neighbours twice in the space of 17 days in February.

Diamond got both at Wetherby Road in a game that City had dominated up to that point – and then struck a late third to seal Valley Parade victory.

MATT JAY (Exeter)

City saw more of Exeter than anyone last season so it’s only right they should have the highest representation.

You won’t find Jay’s two FA Cup goals in the record books but they still officially count. Coming off the bench in the original replay, he scored twice in extra-time and was only denied a hat-trick by the post.

HARRY McKIRDY (Swindon)

McKirdy may be a prime wind-up merchant but he can also play.

City fans witnessed both sides of his game in Swindon’s last-gasp triumph at Valley Parade in March. McKirdy scored the equaliser and was denied a second by a fantastic Alex Bass save – but was later fined £1,000 by the FA for jibes on social media afterwards.
