LIVERSEDGE celebrated an historic league and cup double after a commanding final victory.

Sedge were crowned winners of West Riding County Cup following a 3-1 victory over Brighouse Town.

Goals from Ben Atkinson, Nicky Walker and Lewis Whitham were enough to secure the fantastic achievement for Jonathan Rimmington’s side.

The cup final victory comes after Liversedge won the Northern Premier League East Division last month with 93 points from their 36 games and an impressive +76 goal difference.

In the West Riding County Cup final, Liversedge suffered an early blow when Brighouse’s Laurence Sorhaindo gave his side the lead after 11 minutes.

But Sedge recovered and Atkinson fired an equaliser just nine minutes later. A sustained attack from Sedge eventually yielded the leveller.

The ball eventually came to Whitham on the left and he hit the byline and pulled back to Atkinson who made no mistake from the centre of the box.

Walker put Liversedge on 66 minutes. A free-kick eventually broke for Whitham but Town goalkeeper Brett Souter made an excellent save. The ball returned to Whitham and he laid it back to Walker who drills into the opposite corner through a crowd of bodies.

Sedge’s victory was confirmed with 15 minutes left of normal time.

Joe Walton failed to get a great connection on a low cross but his attempt fell to Whitham who shifts past his man and smashes home with his left foot.

Speaking after the game, Atkinson said: “In the second half, we dominated really.

“I think we were fitter than them. In the end our dominance shone through. We ended the game completely comfortable, I would say.

“It was a lively, hectic game. It didn’t slow down. I was pleased to get another goal.

“The whole club; players, staff, volunteers, fans, have been massive this year. It’s been an unbelievable season, collectively. The team has been a pleasure to play in.”

Whitham added that it had been a pleasure to play in the Liversedge side this season and said there is no reason why they cannot challenge for the league again next season.

A crowd of 1,087 people braved the rain to pack the Yorkshire Payments Stadium for Friday night’s cup showpiece.

It also marked Liversedge’s second West Riding County Cup victory, their first coming in 1989/90.

Meanwhile, Jordan Porter and Kevy Tarangadzo have been voted Goalkeeper of the Year and Defender of the Year for Step 4 of non-league.
