A WEEKEND of destiny awaits Liversedge, with two crunch clashes heading their way.

Jonathan Rimmington’s side take on their biggest test yet as they travel to promotion rivals Marske United today, with Sedge looking to retain their spot at the North Counties East Premier Division’s summit.

Both sides sit on 86 points in their respective league positions (First and second), but a victory would go a long way to either team being crowned champions, with only three games of the campaign left.

And on Monday (April 18) Liversedge must do it all over again- when they take on the league’s inform side and local rivals Brighouse Town, while Marske make the journey to Stockton.

Looking ahead to this weekend’s title deciding double header, Rimmington said: “This weekend is season defining, that includes Monday’s game with Brighouse.

“Brighouse are the form team in the division, winning their last six fixtures- so it will be an extremely tough double header, that’s for sure. Brighouse also have the advantage of not playing this weekend and will be coming into Monday’s game fresh, while we’ll be battling it out for 90 minutes with Marske.

“It’s hard to know what Brighouse team will turn up, but they do have that aspect (not playing) in their favour and they’ll want to beat us anyway because we are local rivals. They’ll do their best to throw a spanner in the works.”

Rimmington added: “The whole weekend will play a big part in deciding the rest of the season. They’ve (Marske) also got a tough trip to Stockton on Monday which won’t be easy. But if we do get the victory against Marske, it will put us in an unbelievable position to win the league.

“It would be a fantastic achievement for us to claim the double over such a great side (Liversedge won 2-1 last time out). Marske are a very experienced team, with a lot of quality and we are quite young, so if we do the double then I firmly believe we deserve to win the league.

“I listened to an interview their (Marske) manager did the other day and he admitted that he expected them to run away with the league, and that he couldn’t believe that we had stayed with them. With three games to go, for us to be still in the race, ‘Little Liversedge’, it’s frightening really.”

The Liversedge boss will be hoping for a similar kind of display to the one that saw his side demolish Stocksbridge 5-0 last Saturday, but he knows it won’t be as straightforward as that.

He said: “We’ve got a game plan in hope of stopping their threats, while utilising our own. For a game of this magnitude, you must prepare well and make sure you give yourself the best possible chance of winning and we believe we’ve done that.

“The players know what we want from them, but it’s then down to the players to deliver. I can overthink the tactical side of things at points but it’s important that we get it right.

“Marske do like to play in tight areas, so we need to be aware of that. We also need to ensure that we don’t take too many touches and move the ball quickly as sometimes we can fall into that trap.

“If we turn up, we can get this all-important victory, we know that. We’ve only been beaten once all season, so we have full confidence in our way of playing.”

The huge contest between the division’s top two sides kicks off today at 3:00 pm at the Mount Pleasant Stadium.
