A YOUNG Bradford gymnast has won gold, silver and bronze in a busy three weeks of national and international competition.

Eighteen-year-old Jack Stanley of Idle competed at the British Gymnastics Under-18 Championships in Liverpool over the weekend and was crowned the Under-18 rings champion and the Under-18 floor champion in the apparatus finals.

He also picked up a bronze medal on the pommel and on Saturday he finished fourth in the all around competition.

The weekend before he represented Great Britain at an international team event at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart, Germany.

The British team came sixth and Jack got bronze in the rings final.

At the British Gymnastics Championships on Saturday, March 12, he became the Under-18 English all around champion, as well as rings and vault champion.

He also took he silver on floor and parallel bars and bronze on pommel.

His proud mum, Tina Stanley, said: "He got back on to the top GB junior squad in January and he finished as overall English champion."

She also said Jack was selected to a British team of boys to compete at the international event in Germany.

"He likes getting the opportunity to represent his country," she said.

"Competing in Germany gave him a chance to see how he compares to athletes from other countries like America and Canada.

"There were quite a few different countries competing there."

He then took part of the biggest competition of the three, the British Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool, an event that ran over four days finishing on Sunday.

The event also featured senior gymnasts, many of whom competed at the Olympics and won medals.

"It's a big competition for the youngsters," said Tina. "They get to mix with the seniors like Joe Fraser.

"Events like this give Jack a lot of inspiration as you can see Olympic medallists competing on the same floor as him."

And while Jack just turned 18 and is still young in the sport, he has his eye on qualifying for the Junior European Championships in August.

"That's his next ambition to get selected in that squad."

And while Jack has excelled in several events, Tina said that he really likes competing in the floor and vault.

"I think he likes the somersaults," said Tina. "But he has also worked really hard to improve on the rings.

Jacks trains at City of Leeds Gymnastics under his coaches Dave Murray, Andy Butcher and Tom Rawlinson.

On top of all his gymnastics training he is also an apprentice mechanic at PCS Castleford Ltd and attends Leeds City College.

"He's always liked cars and bikes so that has worked out well for him," added Tina.
