BRADFORD star Jonny Bairstow scored a superb unbeaten century on day one of the first Test between England and the West Indies in Antigua.

A firm sweep to the boundary late in the day off part-time spinner Kraigg Brathwaite brought up three figures off 190 balls, and the Yorkshire stalwart was sitting on 109 not out at the close of play.

Coming in with England in disarray at 48-4, Bairstow and Ben Stokes dragged the tourists grimly to lunch with just 57 runs on the board, both sitting on five not out.

The two big-hitters opened up a little more after the interval, with Bairstow playing some particularly glorious drives and cuts through the off-side to reach his 50 from 127 balls.

Stokes had been bowled off an inside edge for 36 by that point, but then returning wicketkeeper Ben Foakes more than kept Bairstow company.

The pair put on 99 together, and though Bairstow could count himself a little lucky at times in his innings, with a few streaky edges for four and a review saving him when he was given out caught behind on 59, he generally batted with great authority alongside the attacking Foakes.

The keeper was pinned for lbw on 42, making the score 214-6, with Bairstow having made 80 of those.

But then in came bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes, who started nervously but seemed to grow in confidence with each passing shot.

Bairstow was batting supremely by this point though, and targeted the leg-side more and more as the innings went on.

The sweep of Braithwaite for his hundred saw a typically animated celebration from the Bradfordian, who charged down the pitch with both arms raised, yelling in delight.

He settled down after that to ensure he ended the day unbeaten, and alongside Woakes (24 not out), the pair helped England to a relatively healthy 268-6 at the close of play.
