IT WAS a mixed day for West Bowling at Horsfall on Saturday in Division One of the National Conference League.

They secured an impressive come-from-behind 24-16 victory over West Yorkshire rivals Stanningley and the proceeds from last year’s Lee Hunter Memorial Game were presented to the British Heart Foundation before the game

Hunter, a former Bowling player, tragically passed away at the age of just 44 in 2018, but Bowling now hold a special fundraising event in his honour each season.

And the current crop at the Bradford side did Hunter proud with their performance on Saturday, though it was a nightmare day for hooker Daniel Halmshaw.

Just 35 minutes into the new season, the Bowling star suffered a broken ankle, and depending on how his operation goes, that could be the end of his campaign already.

His team-mates will have at least cheered him up with their victory over Stanningley, though even that looked in doubt early on.

Tom Flannery’s try and conversion after just five minutes put the visitors 6-0 up, and though Lewis Taylor crossed soon after, Harry Williams missed the extras to leave Bowling still two points behind.

Taylor’s converted try after 18 minutes put the hosts ahead for the first time, before Jamaine Ruan went over to level for Stanningley.

Richard Lumb’s try was converted by Williams to put the Bradford side 16-10 in front, and that happened just a few moments before Halmshaw’s horror injury.

Another converted Lumb try gave Bowling some breathing space, before a Williams penalty on the hour mark made the score 24-10.

Tyler Hart crossed in the dying moments, with Flannery adding the extras, to give Stanningley a consolation.

In Division Two, Bradford Dudley Hill found themselves 10-0 in front at Dewsbury Celtic, thanks to tries from Dan Lee and James Flanagan and a successful goal attempt from Brad McClean.

But the Celts turned things around, and Lewis Teale scored a brace of tries to help the hosts to an 18-10 comeback win.

Billy Yarrow also crossed for Dewsbury, while Joe Heaton kicked three goals for them.

Elsewhere, Drighlington were thumped 48-10 by Division Three title favourites East Leeds.

In the Yorkshire Men’s League, Queensbury Celtic had their Premier Division game at New Earswick All Blacks called off due to a waterlogged pitch, while Brighouse Rangers’ scheduled opponents Cutsyke Raiders have now pulled out of the league, so that match did not go ahead either.

In Division Two, Odsal Sedbergh went top with a 32-4 win over Myton Warriors, but Wibsey Warriors lost 22-8 at Ossett Trinity Tigers.

Illingworth’s home game with Farnley Falcons was postponed.

In Division Four, Stanningley’s reserves thumped Garforth Tigers 50-12.
