A FORMER Bradford City goalkeeper who went on to become a well-loved number one at more than one of our local clubs has finally retired at the age of 39.

Jon Worsnop was on the Bantams’ books in 2000 when they were a Premier League side, though he never played in the top-flight, only appearing as an unused substitute.

With first-team chances proving impossible to come by at his hometown club, the Bradfordian moved into non-league with Chester City.

A nomadic few years followed, with Worsnop turning out between the sticks for obscure sides like Aberystwyth Town and Leigh Genesis.

But he returned home to Bradford in 2005, joining Park Avenue for the first of three separate spells at the club.

Worsnop also spent time at Guiseley, and had success in the 2010s between the sticks for the likes of FC United of Manchester, Alfreton Town, and former side Chester.

He returned to Avenue in 2016, helping them to avoid relegation from National League North, before joining their rivals York City.

He had already had three spells with Avenue, and he reached that number with Guiseley after rejoining them in 2018.

And as a man who loved a reunion with former clubs, it was only fitting that he ended his career with Chester, officially retiring from playing on Tuesday.

He posted on Twitter: “Officially retiring from playing and gloves are hung up, massive thanks to all the clubs and fans I’ve played for.

“I’ve met some unbelievable characters and made some great friends.

“Lads enjoy it while you still can, best job in the world.”
