YORKSHIRE are through to the Royal London Cup knockout stages following a remarkable come from behind win by four runs over Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens.

The Vikings recovered from 132-7 to 230 all out, with Jonny Tattersall’s excellent 53 the main contribution on a slow and low Cardiff pitch. He shared 84 for the eighth wicket with Matthew Waite (44).

Group B leaders Glamorgan then batted themselves into a hole, despite a 121 opening stand from Hamish Rutherford and Nick Selman, who made 92.

With 20 overs remaining, they were 123-1 needing only 108 more with the game looking sewn up.

But their lack of intent opened the door for the Vikings, with the superb George Hill (3-49) taking three wickets in six balls spanning two overs as the score fell to 187-4 in the 44th.

That target later became 24 off two overs with five wickets remaining and 11 off the last with four in hand.

And Waite defended it, with two wickets falling in the over and Andrew Salter failing to hit the last ball for six to win. They finished on 226-8.

Glamorgan’s lack of intent was down to them wanting to protect their net run-rate to ensure top spot in the group was claimed even with defeat.

With that, they advance directly to next week’s semi-final with a home tie.

Having finished third in the group with 10 points, Yorkshire will face Essex at Chelmsford tomorrow in the Eliminator tie for the right to advance to next week’s semi-final.

Tattersall and Waite posted the county’s record partnership for the eighth wicket in List A matches against Glamorgan, uniting for 11.1 overs.

Tattersall hit only two boundaries in his 62-ball knock, while Waite’s 44 came off 42 in challenging conditions.

In three previous RL50 games here this season, the highest total was 225-8 in a narrow Glamorgan win over Warwickshire. So the White Rose were definitely in the game at the interval.

Medium pacer Joe Cooke claimed 3-40 from his 10 overs for the hosts, including the wickets of Hill bowled and Matthew Revis caught behind off successive deliveries in the 30th as the score fell to 121-6.

Earlier, off-spinner Salter bowled opener Harry Duke reverse sweeping for 20 on the way to 1-34 from 10.

Duke and Will Luxton, caught at cover off a leading edge, both fell loosely, while captain Gary Ballance defended at Steve Reingold’s off-spin and saw the ball trickle back onto his stumps.

Glamorgan got ragged in the field as Tattersall and Waite, who hit the only six of the innings over long-on off Reingold, set about the revival.

Michael Hogan finished with 2-30 from nine overs and James Weighell 3-55 from 9.5.

Ballance captained Yorkshire despite the return of Dom Bess from England Test duty. Bess had started the competition as the Vikings skipper.

He came back into the side in place of seamer Mat Pillans, with fledgling leg-spinner Sullivan retaining his place after his four wickets in Sunday’s 10-over win against Derbyshire at Chesterfield.

In reply, Glamorgan openers Hamish Rutherford, the former New Zealand international, and Nick Selman dug in against some tight bowling, reaching only 24-0 after 10 overs.

Selman edged a couple of boundaries in the 11th to get things moving having built the platform, and the pair more than doubled their score in the next five overs to take the score to 50-0 after 15.

Left-handed Rutherford lofted Bess for six over long-on and later swept him over the deep square-leg as he reached 50 off 76 balls - 96-0 in the 24th.

Selman reached his fifty shortly afterwards, courtesy of a handsome on-driven boundary off Hill, in 78 balls, by which time the hosts were 117-0 in the 27th over.

Yorkshire required their second revival in the game.

Coad bowled Rutherford for 58 (121-1 in the 28th).

The Welshmen reached the 30-over mark at 123-1, needing 108 more and, with Selman unbeaten on 86, the 40-over mark at 173-1 with 58 needed.

Despite nine wickets still remaining, their lack of intent kept Yorkshire in the hunt.

And when Hill bowled Reingold and Kieran Carlson in the space of five balls in the 42nd over, Yorkshire had put their foot in the door at 182-3 - 49 more required.

Selman then chipped Hill to mid-off at the start of the 44th (187-4).

Revis forced Billy Root to play on in the 47th as the score then fell to 197-5, with 34 needed off 22 balls. At this stage, the game had turned dramatically into Yorkshire’s favour.

Cooke was then caught at long-off against Revis in the penultimate over before Tom Cullen holed out off Waite in the last over before Weighell was run out.

Salter then failed to clear the ropes with the last ball, with a win like few others secured for the Vikings.
