MATTHEW Waite’s outstanding all-round display helped Yorkshire claim a second win in five Royal London Cup matches, beating Warwickshire at Clifton Park in York by 39 runs.

The Vikings recovered from 0-2 in the contest’s first over to post 320-7 thanks largely to half-centuries for Gary Ballance (54), George Hill (64) and Jonny Tattersall’s season’s best 70 at more than a run a ball.

Their total was then boosted significantly by Waite’s unbeaten 42 off only 16 balls, as he hit 32 from the last over of the innings.

His bustling seamers then accounted for two Bears wickets as the Vikings dragged themselves back into contention for a top three finish in Group B with three matches remaining, moving to five points.

Warwickshire fell to 134-5 before 17-year-old Jacob Bethell (66) and fellow youngster Dan Mousley (61) re-ignited their hopes by sharing 115 inside 12 overs.

The target became 72 in nine overs, but Yorkshire held their nerve and bowled the Bears out for 281 inside 48 overs.

Yorkshire got off to a nightmare start, losing Will Fraine caught behind to the seam of George Garrett with the first ball of the match.

And when Will Luxton top-edged a pull to mid-off three balls later, the Vikings were two down in a flash and a score of 300 plus looked a million miles away.

But the trio of half-centuries and some blistering late hitting from Waite turned the game on its head.

Tattersall top-scored with his 70, his first fifty of the season in all competitive cricket for Yorkshire’s first team.

Waite then hit three sixes and three fours off Ethan Brookes as a whopping 32 came from the last over of the innings.

While 300 looked a par score in excellent batting conditions - a true pitch, with short boundaries and a fast outfield - the final over looked to have tipped the game firmly in Yorkshire’s favour. And so it proved.

Following the Fraine and Luxton departures, captain Ballance and Harry Duke (42) shared 89 for the third wicket inside 19 overs to start the rebuild.

Unfortunately, both fell quickly as the score slipped to 114-4 in the 24th over.

Duke was run out trying to pinch a quick single to mid-off and Ballance trapped lbw by the off-spin of Dan Mousley, having earlier lost Yorkshire’s fifth successive toss in Group B.

Hill and Tattersall shared 110, also inside 19 overs, to rebuild once more.

Hill holed out at deep mid-wicket having tried to slog sweep former White Rose spinner Karl Carver before Tattersall was caught at short third-man, leaving the score at 265-6 in the 47th over and paving the way for Waite’s blitz.

The final over started with an above waist high full toss no ball, and two of his sixes down the ground sailed into the nearby house gardens at the City End.

New ball seamer Garrett was only able to bowl seven overs (2-24) for the Bears due to a hamstring injury.

Waite’s productive day then continued with two Warwickshire wickets in the first 10 overs as they fell to 49-2.

Rob Yates miscued a pull to mid-off before fellow opener Ed Pollock uppercut him to third-man, falling for 21 off the last ball of the 10th over. He had hit two leg-side sixes at the start of the over.

Will Rhodes and Michael Burgess steadied the ship by sharing 62, only for both to fall in the space of three overs as the score slipped from 111-2 to 128-4.

Looking for two, Rhodes was run out for 37 by a Luxton direct hit from deep mid-wicket at the non-striker’s end in the 24th before Hill bowled Burgess (33) in the 27th.

The excellent Ben Coad then had Matt Lamb caught by Duanne Olivier - back in the side following a back injury - running around towards deep backward square-leg as the score slipped to 134-5 in the 30th.

But the game was about to swing once more as Bethell and Mousley posted their maiden one-day fifties and shared a Warwickshire record sixth-wicket partnership versus Yorkshire in List A cricket, 115 inside 12 overs.

Bethell reached his fifty in only 27 balls and, like Waite earlier, hoisted four sixes.

Thankfully, Olivier had him caught at cover off a miscue, leaving the score at 249-6 in the 42nd over.

Hill then struck twice in the 45th over, getting Brookes and Carver (270-8), before Mousley drilled Coad to mid-off in the next without further addition.

Hill’s 3-47 from 10 overs represented a career best, while Coad finished with 3-30 from 9.3, including Garrett caught at deep midwicket to seal victory.
