SIR- Congratulations to Team GB in the Olympics in what has been another magnificent gold rush.

But I have to disagree with the dummy-spitting, rattling Piers Morgan, shouting from his naughty corner. Getting a silver or bronze does not make you a loser. It means you must be very good at what you do.

I also didn't understand the England team who mostly discarded their runners-up medals at the Euros. This showed a lack of understanding of the historical context and undermined the achievement of reaching the final.

Jimmy White losing six world snooker finals isn't really important. What matters is that he had millions on the edge of their seats by being an entertainer.

When Bradford City were promoted to the Premier League, there was no gold medal, or even a first place but we celebrated like it was 1999. The year after we celebrated finishing 17th.

Then of course there was skiing legend Eddie the Eagle Edwards. He was the star of the 1988 Winter Olympics by finishing last! As he would put it - in sport, what matters is not the winning, it's the being taken apart.
