THE needle on the Priestley Cup seismograph wobbled for a few hours during the second round at various venues but, Ossett apart, never developed into a full-blown shock of an earthquake.

One example was at Albert Terrace, where Woodlands won the toss, put Methley in and watched them advance to 70-1.

Then spinners Kez Ahmed and Chris Brice weaved their magic and the last nine wickets fell for just 39.

But Methley’s fine start wasn’t the only tremor as Woodlands, playing loose shots, were reduced to 28-3 in reply before recovering to win by six wickets.

Woodlands wicket-keeper Greg Finn had to show his athleticism off the first ball of the day – a wide by Tom Clee – and Gharib Nawaz was able to swivel pull the same bowler for boundaries behind square to get Methley off to a good start.

A leading edge did for teenage opener Alex Cree, well taken low in the slips by Muhammad Bilal off Elliot Richardson, and a Bilal delivery was then flashed over gully by Nawaz as the runs ticked on to 70 off 15 overs.

Scoring runs became a completely different kettle of fish, however, once off-spinner Ahmed and left-arm spinner Brice bowled in tandem.

Three wickets fell in 15 deliveries with the score on 70, and by drinks Methley had slipped to 93-5.

The visitors needed Nawaz to stay there but he had a rush of blood and holed out to Schmulian in the deep, and the innings subsided to 109 all out, including an awful reverse sweep, with 21.1 overs unused, which is particularly criminal in a cup tie.

Minds freed by chasing such a small total, Woodlands then had some brain fades, for example chasing a swinging wide half-volley in the manner of Dan Lawrence, and when Laban took a good reaction catch high above his head to dismiss Tim Jackson, the home side were 28-3 and the seismograph needle was twitching.

But Liam Collins, not averse to taking risks either on his way to 42 not out off 47 balls, including six fours and a six, and Scott Richardson (21) doused the flames with a stand of 72 to take Woodlands to the brink of the quarter-finals, with Collins finishing the job off.

Elsewhere, Bradford & Bingley pulled of the most dramatic win as teenager Lachlan Doidge hit a six from the fifth ball of the final over from Kavindu Kulasekara to secure a nail-biting one-wicket win at Morley.

Other results included Keighley losing to East Bierley, Bankfoot losing to Townville and also Ossett beat Wrenthorpe.
