CITY will be pressing for a quick answer after managerial target Derek Adams clinched Wembley glory with Morecambe.

The Scot, who is understood to have always been the top choice to take the Valley Parade hot-seat, steered the Shrimps into League One for the first time in their history with a 1-0 win over Michael Flynn’s Newport.

Carlos Mendes Gomes scored the only goal in a nervy play-off final with an extra-time penalty after John O’Sullivan appeared to go down outside the box in a challenge with Newport defender Ryan Haynes.

It is Adams’ fourth promotion as a manager and the second time he has taken a team up from League Two after finishing second with Plymouth in 2017. He also previously won the Scottish First and Second Divisions with Ross County.

Adams played a predictable straight bat when quizzed about City's interest immediately after the game.

He said: "My future lies in celebrating tonight. Morecambe Football Club are in League One, and they haven’t been there before.

"Listen, there are no done deals, and that’s me being perfectly honest.”

Morecambe were 5/1 favourites to be relegated to the National League before the season began.

“We can take great pride in where we’ve come from," added Adams. "We’ve got the lowest wage bill in 92 clubs in English football so that tells you it’s not all about finance.

“It tells you about team spirit and the ability we have.”

Adams was interviewed for the Valley Parade job in December and has remained high in their thoughts.

City made it clear they would not be looking for further applicants when Mark Trueman and Conor Sellars were removed from the post at the end of the season.
