JORDAN Thompson has agreed a contract extension with Yorkshire that will keep him at the club until at least October 2023.

The dynamic all-rounder has cemented a place in their County Championship side with a string of consistent performances throughout 2020 and this season so far.

This has included 37 first-class wickets, with a best of 5-31, along with 412 runs at an average of 25.75.

Thompson said: “I’m delighted to have signed for another two years.

“We had a strange year last year with the two-month season, but I came out of it having done pretty well with both bat and ball.

“I’ve been lucky along the way. There’s been a few injuries that have let me in but it’s about taking your chance when you get it and at the moment, I’m doing that.

“By no means do I think I’ve cemented a spot. With the lads around me in the all-rounder positions, there’s always competition for places, but I’ll be working hard to keep hold of that spot.”

Thompson has become a popular figure amongst watching photographers, with many a photo-opportunity coming from the nature of the right-arm quicks celebrations.

“Being passionate comes from the way I’ve been brought up with my sport,” Thompson remarked.

“I try to get into a battle. I always have that fight in a game no matter the circumstances, but most of all I just enjoy being out there playing for Yorkshire, and playing with the group of lads that we’ve got at the moment.

“It’s a promising squad and hopefully we can achieve some good things.”

Yorkshire’s director of cricket, Martyn Moxon, said: “We’ve seen a real development and a growing maturity with Jordan, both as a person and as a player.

“Last summer in the Bob Willis Trophy he showed great skills both with bat and ball and he has continued that this season.

“It is very pleasing to see his progression and he has huge potential going forward.

“It’s vital to have players like Jordan, who give us a lot of depth to our batting.

“We’ve got a strength in depth when it comes to all-rounders so that allows us to manage workloads, but these players will be key to our success going forward.”

Thompson is in the 13-man squad to take on Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford in the County Championship tomorrow, alongside George Hill and Jack Shutt, but Dawid Malan is not included for personal reasons.

Jonny Tattersall has gone to Gloucestershire on a one-game loan deal and with Jonny Bairstow not in the squad either, teenage wicket-keeper Harry Duke is set to play again.

Yorkshire squad for Old Trafford: Lyth, Kohler-Cadmore, Ballance, Brook, Hill, Bess, Thompson, Duke, Willey, Patterson (captain), Coad, Olivier, Shutt.
