BULLS have announced that Joe Burton has penned a new, first-team deal with the club - which means he will be with them until at least the end of 2022.

The youngster joined the Bradford Bulls Academy at the back end of 2020 but made an instant impression - with head coach John Kear elevating Burton to train with the first team.

An option at full-back, wing or in the centre, Burton featured in a pre-season friendly against Swinton Lions, before making his professional debut against the same opponent in the Round Five clash two weeks ago.

Having secured his future, Burton is now targeting more run outs in the red, amber and black and has heaped praise on the veteran Bradford boss.

“It feels good to have signed – I think I am at the right place. I have enjoyed my time since I have been here and I am looking forward to the future,” said Burton.

“John [Kear] is a great coach to play for, he tells you how it is and if you need anything then he tells you.

“I feel like I have handled the transition well, it has been a big step up from academy to first team but all the lads have been encouraging me, helping me out.

“I was a bit nervous before the Swinton game but I enjoyed it and hopefully I can now try and get as many games as possible under my belt.”

Head coach Kear has spoken of his delight at securing Burton’s signature – the Bradford boss full of belief the young back can go on to achieve great things.

“I am absolutely delighted Joe has signed – I think he has a big future in the game,” said Kear.

“We offered him a one-year extension to elevate him to the first team which is just reward for his hard work and endeavour.

“His character is one of competitive determination and that certainly shines through and he is obviously a very good player, having played for England Academy.

“He was initially called up to the first team to train as a reward for his efforts with the academy and then he made a marvellous debut away at Swinton.

“I did not expect him to feature for the first team but I am delighted he’s proved me wrong – this has been forced upon us because he has a big future and we want that to be here at Bradford.”

Burton comes from a family of talented rugby siblings, with twin brother Oli part of the Leeds Rhinos Academy and older sister Abi playing union for the England Sevens.
