STEVE Patterson claimed his 400th career wicket in the County Championship as 14 fell during a hectic second day between Yorkshire and Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens.

After day one was washed out in Cardiff, the start of this fixture saw Glamorgan bowled out for 149 inside 54 overs before fighting back to restrict the White Rose to 69-4 from 25.

Bad light meant no play beyond 5.35pm.

Patterson and Harry Brook claimed three wickets apiece, with Brook’s 3-15 from eight overs of medium pace a career-best return.

Nineteen-year-old Harry Duke had an encouraging start to his first-team debut, with his energy behind the stumps particularly noticeable. It was just a shame that a tidy performance did not feature his first catch.

Yorkshire, who elected to bowl upon winning the toss, seized the advantage - which was later eroded - in the final half hour of the morning after an even start to proceedings.

Jordan Thompson trapped Joe Cooke lbw and Ben Coad removed Australian Test star Marnus Labuschagne - for only 10 - the same way as Glamorgan fell to 34-2 in the 11th over.

A 35-run stand between opener David Lloyd and Billy Root steadied things in helpful bowling conditions; seam, swing and uneven bounce were all evident.

Thankfully, wickets then tumbled. Glamorgan lost four for four in 18 balls, slipping from 69-2 in the 25th over to 73-6 in the 28th.

Captain Patterson, in his 150th competition appearance, bowled Lloyd shouldering arms for an innings-high 31 and had Kiran Carlson caught at first slip by Tom Kohler-Cadmore in the 25th.

Brook then had Root (23) caught and bowled one-handed off a leading edge in the next over and got Dan Douthwaite lbw for a duck in the 28th.

Glamorgan, 77-6 at lunch, almost doubled their score after the break as Aussie seamer Michael Neser and unbeaten Andrew Salter hit 24 apiece.

They shared 35 for the eighth wicket after Brook had trapped home skipper Chris Cooke lbw in the third over of the session.

Neser and Salter advanced the score from 82-7 before the former was caught low down by Adam Lyth at second slip off Thompson - 117-8 in the 44th.

Patterson’s 400th wicket was then Timm van der Gugten, caught by Kohler-Cadmore diving forwards at first slip, as the hosts fell to 128-9 after 49.

David Willey, back in Yorkshire’s team in place of rested Duanne Olivier, wrapped up the innings with his only wicket when Michael Hogan miscued to Joe Root at mid-off in the 54th over.

Unfortunately for Yorkshire, the afternoon drama was not over as they slipped to 10-3 inside seven overs of their reply.

Lyth and Kohler-Cadmore fell inside four overs - 6-2.

Lyth, for a duck, was the victim of a stunning one-handed diving catch by Carlson off Neser and Kohler-Cadmore lost his off-stump for one as he shouldered arms at Hogan.

Gary Ballance, dropped on nought in the slips, was then caught at third-man for seven as he attempted to uppercut Neser.

A lovely moment began the evening session when Billy Root was presented with his Glamorgan first-team cap on the boundary edge as Joe walked back out to bat.

It is thought neither brother had prior knowledge of what was about to happen, and Joe joined in with the applause of the Glamorgan players and coaches and followed it with a congratulatory fist bump.

Brook was then trapped lbw by Neser for 11 - 36-4 in the 13th over - and Root’s job was now to hold Yorkshire’s innings together.

He and Dom Bess (16) shared an unbroken 33, with Root’s unbeaten 34 the highest score of a day which ended with a further 23 overs lost to the weather.
