CITY’S bosses are ready to prove they are more than one-trick ponies.

Mark Trueman and Conor Sellars rebuilt the season on the back of a formation switch to 4-2-3-1 to cut down the goals being leaked when the team were in the bottom three.

It was a tactic that has served them well – but the duo are keen not be pigeon-holed as coaches who are only comfortable playing that way.

Trueman said: “That was the formation we identified for this group of players and it worked really well.

“But we are a coaching team who want to play attacking football and we have done.

“We’ve played 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 a lot with the youth team etc and in past clubs. It’s wrong to think that we can just play 4-2-3-1.

“Hopefully in the next couple of weeks, you’ll see us experimenting and see if these players can do it in different formations. Then we can really look at how we can set up next season.”

City intend to broaden the parameters for their summer recruitment to allow them to play in a more expansive way in the future.

“The nucleus of the team at the moment who are contracted for next season are playing 4-2-3-1 and have shown they can compete and win matches with that system,” added Trueman.

“We know now that is a formation these players can play but we need to have the right personnel in the building that can offer something different.

“That will allow us to add our spin on being more attacking and expansive and winning football matches by putting two or three past teams.

“We did it against Forest Green but that was a game when we had a plan to counter on them. We want to score more goals from playing through or over teams with attractive football.”
