TEENAGER Kian Scales played superbly in City's 2-1 win at Colchester on Saturday afternoon, and described the joy of netting his first senior goal.

He opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a glorious curling effort, and was unlucky not to add a second, rattling the crossbar late on.

It was Scales' second consecutive start in a City shirt, and more performances like that could well cement his place in the first XI.

Talking about his dream day, the 19-year-old said: "It was a good goal and I was just happy to score.

"Ever since I made my league debut I've wanted to help the team out and score as many goals as I can and I've done that here."

Scales played out wide in Essex, having looked a little lost at times in the number 10 role against Scunthorpe last Tuesday.

Asked if he preferred being over on the right hand side, Scales said: "I wouldn't say I'm naturally a winger, but Mark (Trueman) and Conor (Sellars) told me to roll inside and get in the pockets.

"I think that's something I'm good at and that's where the goal's come from, even if it was from the other side of the pitch.

"I was happy to be able to pick up the ball more. I think I grew on my Scunthorpe performance and it was a good win for us."

Scales is always happy to listen to Trueman and Sellars, and has worked with them for longer than most, having spent time with the duo in the under-18s set-up.

The teenager said: "I've worked with them for two years and they haven't changed one bit.

"All of us know what they want, and we can do that. It's good having the two of them in charge."

At 33 and 29 respectively, Trueman and Sellars are both comfortably younger than Scales' main partner in crime on Saturday, the 37-year-old Clayton Donaldson.

Talking about taking things on board from the experienced players around him, like Donaldson and Gareth Evans, Scales said: "I can learn a lot off them.

"Just in the way they protect the ball and pick it up in the pockets and go forward.

"Clayton got two assists today (on Saturday) and he did really well, and I just want to be able to do that kind of thing."

Assessing the win at Colchester as a whole, Scales said: "It was a scrappy performance from everyone but we've hung on and got the three points, which is the main thing at the end of the day."

Scales did not want to speculate too much on his long-term future, saying: "I just want to take it a game at a time, and then come the end of the season, see what happens for next year, but I want to stay here."
