JOE Root's battling effort on day four of the second Test against India was not enough to save England from a crushing 317-run defeat.

The Yorkshire superstar made 33 from 92 balls, and occupied the crease for over two hours, before he was eighth man out, caught by Ajinkya Rahane off the bowling of debutant Axar Patel.

Patel went on to take 5-60, while he was backed up nicely by fellow spinners Ravi Ashwin (3-53) and Kuldeep Yadav (2-25).

The game in Chennai only just made it past lunch on day four, with England already seven down after the morning session.

Root and Olly Stone were dismissed quickly by Patel after lunch.

But last pair Moeen Ali and Stuart Broad put on 38 in three overs, thanks to the former's memorable cameo of 43 from just 18 balls, which included five sixes.

Ali went down swinging, stumped by Rishabh Pant off Yadav, as England were bowled out for just 164.
