THACKLEY suffered a heartbreaking late home defeat in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division on Saturday, losing 3-2 against Handsworth despite equalising in the 86th minute.

Albion Sports and Silsden also both lost, but Division One leaders Campion romped to a 7-1 win at Harrogate Railway Athletic, while Liversedge reached the FA Vase First Round with a 3-1 victory over Ashton Athletic.

Thackley started brightest in their game, creating numerous chances and seeing new signing Mark Trueman hit the bar from a free-kick.

They took the lead half an hour in, when striker Chris Lever was felled in the area and Ben Grech-Brooksbank converted the penalty.

Despite being well on top, and having a huge penalty appeal turned down when Seb Scaroni was seemingly pushed over in the box, Thackley conceded from an Oscar Radford free-kick right on half-time.

Adam Muller missed a good chance to score early in the second half for Thackley, and instead it was Handsworth who went in front through Bailey Hobson after 72 minutes.

When Matt Broadley netted at the back post late on, it looked as if Thackley had grabbed an important point, but an 88th minute diving header from Leon Howarth won it for the visitors.

To compound matters further for the Dennyboys, they had James Rothel sent off in injury-time.

Albion’s defeat was more straightforward. They were nowhere near their best, and lost 2-0 at Grimsby Borough thanks to goals from Reece York and Jordan Barnett.

Silsden battled hard at Maltby Main, and saw Chris Wademan have a shot cleared off the line, but they went down 1-0 to an early Jonathan Hill goal.

It could have been worse, but Maltby missed from the spot after half an hour.

Down in Division One, Campion must have been worried when Harrogate opened the scoring after two minutes with a Dan Thirkell penalty.

But they had turned it round by half-time thanks to doubles from Jason Carney and Aidan Kirby.

And Sean Hunter hit a second half treble to ensure a superb 7-1 win for Campion.

Sedge had lost twice in the last three years to Ashton in the FA Vase, but it was third time lucky on Saturday.

They went 1-0 down early on to a Harvey Whyte strike, but Oliver Fearon levelled soon after.

Joe Walton put Sedge in front after 47 minutes and Fearon wrapped up the game with his second late on.

They will host Newcastle Benfield in the next round.

Brighouse Town are out of the FA Trophy after a 1-0 defeat at Kendal Town in the Second Qualifying Round.

Emil Jaaskelainen scored the only goal of the game on 35 minutes, and Brighouse could not respond, despite Kendal playing the last 20 minutes with 10 men after a Jamie Hodgson red card.

Finally, Steeton came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Cleator Moor Celtic in the North West Counties League First Division North thanks to late goals from Kayle Price and Ben Wignall.
