Luke Charge, a 14-year-old member of Clayton Angling Club, came third in a club match at Tollerton Ponds, North Yorkshire, with a total weight of 98lb of carp.

It meant he finished just behind second place, who had a weight of 108lb, with the winner on 130lb.

With 26 anglers taking part and most aged 50 plus, this was a fantastic achievement for the teenager.

Last Saturday's match on the canal was fished in constant rain.

There were joint-winners, in father and son J. Mason and B. Mason. Each came in with a total weight of 1lb 3oz.

E. Harrison was third with 15.5oz, while M. Wright finished fourth with 11oz.

Tomorrow's match is on the Kirkstall Marina length of the canal. There have been a few trout caught in the closing days of the season on the River Aire, but none of exceptional weight.

Sunday's winter league match was cancelled due to high water levels.

In its place, a knock-up was hastily arranged on the Aire and Calder Navigation. R. Gaunt won with 14lb 6oz, while C. Hardy finished second with 13lb.

This Sunday's match is at Nun Monkton for the Dave Rayner Memorial Trophy.
