STUART McCall praised Lee Novak’s finishing ability after the striker’s two goals earned City their first league win.

Novak took his tally to four with a second-half double as the Bantams came from behind to beat Stevenage 2-1 at Valley Parade.

The frontman had earlier missed arguably his easiest chance with a point-blank header saved by keeper Jamie Cumming.

But he bounced back after the break to head home Tyler French’s cross and score the winner following good set-up play from Billy Clarke.

McCall said: “I’ve worked with Noves at Scunthorpe and see him day in, day out on the training ground. He’s a good finisher.

“He leads the line well and he’s a good professional. There will be times he misses chances but the two goals he got today showed what a good finisher he can be.

“I played with Ally McCoist who scored 300 odd goals for Rangers which is unbelievable. But he probably missed three million.

“But it never affected him. Noves had a chance at Bolton when he could have scored but then he popped up with a goal.

“Strikers will miss opportunities but it’s having that confidence and courage to come back and be in the right place. They were two lovely finishes.”

McCall was disappointed with the defending with Elliot List’s opener for Stevenage but convinced his team at half-time that they would come back – as they did against the same opposition last season.

He added: “I told the players I still expected them to come off at the end of the game as winners.

“As long as we kept playing at that higher tempo and we took the chances when they came along. We needed to be clinical in the second half and we certainly were.

“The main thing today was to get the result. It was a positive performance with a lot of things but, as I’ve said to the lads, I’m sure we will get better.”
