DAVID Stiff’s sensational big-hitting powered Hanging Heaton to victory over Bradford & Bingley in the Gordon Rigg T20 Group A Cup final at Tofts Road.

He smashed an unbeaten 68 from just 19 balls, which gave his side control of the match as they eased to a 60-run win.

Stiff arrived at the wicket following the dismissal of opener Gary Fellows, who had made 56 from 42 balls out of a score of 113-3.

The departure of Fellows, bowled by Ed Brown, appeared to be a key blow for Bradford & Bingley, who looked to have things under control after an impressive spell of 2-12 from left-arm spinner, Bradley Reeve.

Stiff wasted no time changing the balance of the game. The powerful all-rounder announced his arrival by hitting his first ball from Brown for four, but few could have predicted the savage assault that was to follow.

A staggering 94 runs came from the final 4.4 overs, as the shell-shocked Bradford & Bingley bowlers were blasted to all parts of Pudsey by the scything bat of Stiff.

At the height of the onslaught, Stiff took 32 from the 19th over from poor Billy Whitford.

He smashed four sixes and two fours, leaving the bowler with the unenviable figures of 0-60 from his four overs. Stiff's innings contained eight massive sixes and five fours.

Until Stiff launched into the bowling, the story was all about Fellows, who played with grace and good sense, but even his quality innings was overshadowed once Stiff exploded on the scene.

Bradford & Bingley needed a good start if they were to have any hope of challenging the Hanging Heaton score of 207-5.

Opener Patrick Dixon, who has been in good form in the competition, was quickly on the attack as he dominated an opening stand of 50 with Mathew Duce.

Dixon hit four sixes in his 45 before falling lbw to the slow left-arm bowling of Nick Connolly.

Bradford & Bingley suffered another blow soon after when Brown was superbly caught in the deep by Callum Geldart, off the bowling of Stiff.

With the run rate climbing and the pressure intensifying, Hanging Heaton took control. Yasir Abbas made a breezy 30, but wickets tumbled at regular intervals.

Left-arm spinner Callum Bethel (4-33) and that man Stiff (3-15) were the bowlers to prosper as Bradford & Bingley were bowled out for 147 after 18.2 overs.

For Hanging Heaton, this was the third time they have won the competition in the past four seasons, but significantly, this was the first piece of silverware for their new captain Ben Kohler-Cadmore.

No doubt in years to come this will be remembered by those who enjoyed the sunny weather and witnessed some remarkable hitting as the “David Stiff Final.”

And for hosts Pudsey St Lawrence, who expertly staged the match, the afternoon provided them with a fitting event to grace their 175th anniversary celebrations.
